Vaccination Requirements

Recommended Vaccinations for Travel to Africa

Before traveling to Kenya from the U.S. for 7-10 days, it is essential to ensure you are up to date on key vaccinations and take preventive medications to stay healthy during your trip. The following vaccinations and medications are commonly recommended for Kenya:

Routine Vaccinations:

Ensure that you are up to date with standard vaccines such as:
  1. MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella)
  2. Tdap (Tetanus, Diphtheria, Pertussis)
  3. Polio
  4. Chickenpox
  5. Influenza

Travel-Specific Vaccinations:

  1. Yellow Fever: Required if traveling to areas where yellow fever is endemic. You will need proof of vaccination to enter Kenya if you’re traveling from a country with yellow fever(
    Go2Africa)(University Hospitals).
  2. Typhoid: Spread through contaminated food and water, especially important in rural or poor sanitation areas (Fit for Travel).
  3. Hepatitis A: Recommended due to risk from food and water (University Hospitals).
  4. Hepatitis B: For those who may be exposed to infected blood or body fluids (Fit for Travel).
  5. Meningococcal Meningitis: Advised if you’ll be in close contact with local populations (University Hospitals).

Preventive Medications:

  • Malaria Pills: Malaria is widespread in Kenya except for Nairobi and highland areas. Medications such as atovaquone/proguanil or doxycycline should be taken starting before your trip and continuing after your return(Go2Africa)(Fit for Travel).

Optional Vaccinations:

  • Rabies: Recommended for travelers at higher risk of animal exposure, especially if visiting rural areas(University Hospitals).
Please consult with a healthcare provider or a travel clinic several weeks before your trip to get personalized advice, as they can help tailor recommendations based on your medical history and itinerary.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, you must apply for your visitation visa at least 2 weeks prior to your scheduled travel, as Africa does not allow you to apply for a VISA at the border of entry. Visit https://etakenya.go.ke/en to apply today.

It must not expire within 6 months of your planned travel. If you need to renew your passport, visit https://www.rushmypassport.com/.

You need to get malaria prevention. You should start taking the pills at least 2 days before traveling to Africa so your immune system is ready.

This varies on every tour. We have done everything from ribbon cuttings on brand new water tanks we have sponsored to painting blackboard walls to funding computer libraries. Be prepared to bring clothes you’re comfortable having covered in dirt and paint so you can be ready for the unexpected. We recommend packing 2 pairs of hiking or cargo pants, 3-4 dark t-shirts, 1 long-sleeve shirt, closed-toed sneakers or hiking shoes, a hat.

No, the investment covers the cost of your food, in-country flights, and hotel stays, but it does NOT include your flight from where you live to Africa and back.

Yes, there will be local photographers and videographers there to capture photos and videos along the entire trip.

If something comes up in your personal life where you are unable to come on the Africa trip you were designated to participate in, then we can give you a credit for the next tour or come up with another solution together.
